About Xarelto

Xarelto is a popular anticoagulant drug which is typically prescribed to reduce the risk of blood clots in patients with several different types of medical conditions including Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), Atrial Fibrillation (A-fib), Pulmonary Embolism (PE) and other conditions.

What Makes Xarelto Different From Other Traditional Blood Thinners?

Xarelto is part of a new class of blood thinners known as Novel Oral Anticoagulants (NOACs), which differ from traditional blood thinning drugs such as Warfarin.

Traditional blood thinners typically consist of the chemical compound coumarin, which reduces the risk of blood clots by decreasing the production of blood clotting agents that rely on vitamin K.

When excessive bleeding occurs in a patient using Warfarin, a high dosage of vitamin K can often be used to stop, or at least slow, the rate of bleeding.

On the other hand, Xarelto consists of rivaroxaban, which does not affect vitamin K reliant agents. Therefore, high doses of vitamin K cannot be used to stop major bleeding. Furthermore, there is not a known antidote for Xarelto which can be used to stop excessive internal bleeding after it begins.

How Xarelto Became America’s #1 Blood Thinner

Xarelto was initially authorized by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2011 for use in preventing blood clots and strokes in people being treated for knee or hip replacement procedures.

Furthermore, the medication received approval for additional uses since then and is now approved for six total indications.
Specifically, Xarelto is approved for the following:

  1. Treatment of DVT
  2. Treatment of PE
  3. Preventing DVT after knee replacement
  4. Preventing DVT after hip replacement
  5. Reducing risk of recurrence of DVT and PE
  6. Reducing the risk of stroke in non-valvular Atrial Fibrillation (A-fib)

Due to its FDA approvals and touted benefits over traditional blood thinning medications, Xarelto quickly became the leading blood thinner in the US, with more prescriptions than any other blood thinners in its class.

However, new research has established that the drug causes severe side effects like irreparable internal bleeding leading to grim injuries or even death.

Arizona Bleeding Injuries That May Be Linked To Xarelto

People throughout America have been prescribed Xarelto over the past few years. In fact, 11 million plus Xarelto prescriptions have been dispensed in the US since the drug received its FDA approval, according to the drug’s official US website.

By using population estimates from the US Census Bureau and data from clinical trials, we have been able to assess the number of extensive internal bleeding incidences that mat be Xarelto related in Arizona and its five major cities.

How Many Xarelto Victims Are There In Arizona?

The population of Arizona was approximately 6,731,000 last year, according to estimates from the US Census Bureau.

By weighting the population of Arizona against the overall American population, we ascertain that of the 11 million total Xarelto prescription in the US, approximately 232,104 were prescribed to individuals in the State of Arizona.

Using incidence rates from clinical trials (specifically the Rocket AF study) we estimate that there may be up to 3,946 people in Arizona who suffered a severe internal bleed that may have been linked to Xarelto.
Additionally, we estimate the following bleeding incidents linked to Xarelto in Arizona’s five largest cities:

  • Phoenix – 887
  • Tucson – 310
  • Mesa – 272
  • Chandler – 150
  • Gilbert – 141

Please note these figures are approximations stemming from our research and may differ from the exact figure of severe bleeding events associated with Xarelto.
