What is Xarelto?
Xarelto is an anticoagulant drug that has been prescribed to patients for various reasons since the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved it in 2011. The active ingredient in Xarelto is a drug called rivaroxaban.
Xarelto is an Xa inhibitor, meaning that it blocks a chemical in the blood called thrombin. Thrombin causes the blood to clot and by blocking it the drug is intended to breakdown and prevent clots and deep vein thrombosis, both of which patients could experience after undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery. The drug can also be used to treat atrial fibrillation. Since Xarelto was approved in 2011, over 11 million prescriptions have been written for Xarelto.
Dangerous Xarelto Side Effects
Recently, several studies have linked Xarelto to serious side effects because it can cause uncontrollable internal bleeding by preventing the blood from being able to clot in the event of an injury. In 2013 the FDA released a report that analyzed the adverse events surrounding Xarelto. The report stated that in 2013 there were over 2,100 reports of adverse events in which the patient was taking Xarelto and 1,821 of those cases cited Xarelto as the primary cause of the adverse event.
The two most commonly reported adverse events are pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis, followed by gastrointestinal bleeds and hemorrhages. Individuals have also reported cerebrovascular incidents, hematoma, dyspnea, hemoglobin deficiency, and edema. Currently Xarelto carries two ‘Black Box Warnings’ from the FDA, the most strict warning the FDA can issue for a drug.
Internal Bleeding Incidents in California
At the time of the 2010 Census, California had a population of 37,253,956. By comparing this number to the number of Xarelto prescriptions written for the entire United States population, we can estimate that there were around 22,563 people in California with a prescription for or taking Xarelto, meaning that there could be up to as many as 22,563 people who have experienced adverse side effects. We were able to use the same formula to estimate how many people in the five largest cities in California could be taking Xarelto and possibly experiencing it’s dangerous side effects.
- Los Angeles – 3,884,307
- San Diego – 1,355,896
