What Is Xarelto?

Xarelto is a blood thinner or anticoagulant that is jointly manufactured and by pharmaceutical giants Bayer and  Johnson & Johnson. It is part of a drug class referred to as Xa inhibitors.

The drug is an orally taken blood thinner that individuals are prescribed to prevent clotting of the blood, which can have serious consequences such as strokes and heart attacks.

Xarelto: A Uniform Dosage

Xarelto is different to other blood thinners because it comes in a uniform prescription. Other blood thinners, like Warfarin, have customized treatment plans and dosages that are made by the prescribing doctor, specifically to treat the coagulation problems experienced by the patient.  This “Xarelto Difference” was marketed by the drug’s manufacturers and touted as more convenient, given the lack of blood monitoring typical with other blood thinners.

FDA Approval of Xarelto

Xarelto was initially approved by the Food and Drug Administration (the FDA) for reducing the risk of blood clots in patients who had hip or knee replacement surgery. The next indication that Xarelto was approved for was to prevent coagulation  in patients suffering from atrial fibrillation (also known as an irregular heartbeat). In a rushed approval, the FDA also approved Xarelto for treating patients who suffer from deep vein thrombosis (also known as DVT).

New Blood Thinners In The US – Are they Dangerous?

It is predicted that the sales of blood thinners in the US, will be stronger than any other drug in the US moving forward. Below is a listing of the newest line of blood thinners which are marketed on the basis that they are more convenient than Warfarin’s strict dietary and blood monitoring requirements. However, many questions and adverse events have been raised by these new drugs given the majority of them were manufactured and marketed without any antidote to reverse the effect of anti-coagulation.

  • Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) – manufactured by Bayer AG and Johnson & Johnson
  • Eliquis (Apixaban) – manufactured by Pfizer and Bristol-Myers Squibb
  • Pradaxa (Dabigatran) – manufactured by Boehringer Ingleheim
  • Lixiana (Edoxaban) – manufactured by Daiichi Sankyo

What Are The Side Effects Of Xarelto®?

As with any blood thinner, one of the most severe side effects is internal uncontrollable bleeding. Xarelto® is no different. However, the main problem concerning Xarelto® is that there is no available antidote to stop a bleed, which often causes death or very serious injury.

The FDA adverse events reporting highlights the following common side effects for those who take Xarelto® as a blood thinner:

  • Increased risk of serious blood clots
  • Brain hemorrhaging and other internal bleeding
  • Uncontrollable abdominal and gastrointestinal bleeds

  • Pulmonary Embolism
  • Epidural hematoma
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Negatively effected blood platelet counts

  • Abnormalities of liver function
  • Stroke or Transient Ischemia Attack
  • Heart Attacks
  • Death because of a “bleed out”

Xarelto Lawsuits Being Filed Alleging The Drug Caused Serious Injury And Death

Personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits are being filed across the United States against the Bayer and Johnson & Johnson, the manufacturer and distributor of Xarelto, alleging that the drug caused serious complications, and life threatening internal bleeds.

Multidistrict Litigation Formed For Xarelto

On December 12, 2014, the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation formed the Xarelto MDL on the basis that all lawsuits raised similar issues and that by the end of the litigation there is expected to be thousands of lawsuits filed against Xarelto.

Why File A Xarelto Lawsuit?

If you were seriously injured or if your loved one was seriiously injured or died as a result of internal bleeding complications, you are likely facing many expensive medical bills, financial loss through funeral expenses or lost income, and emotional distress.

Many families have already begun the road to recovery through filing a lawsuit against the manufacturers of Xarelto and other drugs that caused similar outcomes, such as Pradaxa. In fact, Pradaxa settled 4,000 claims (that are somewhat similar to current lawsuits being filed against Xarelto) for $650 million.

Allegations In Xarelto Lawsuits

The lawsuits filed in the Xarelto litigation allege that:

  1. Bayer and Johnson & Johnson failed to warn about irreversible bleeding
  2. the Manufacturers made fraudulent misrepresentations as to the effectiveness of Xarelto
  3. the Distributors continued to sell Xarelto to the public even though they knew the drug was dangerous
